Fireworks safety tips for adults, kids and pets.
Let’s be clear: the safest way to enjoy fireworks is from a distance as a spectator. Shooting off fireworks yourself is not a great idea. If you have to set off your own fireworks some safety tips can come in handy.
Let’s be real: We know we can’t talk all of you out of lighting your own fireworks. We’ll keep trying, but in the meantime, we’ve collected some of the best advice from Richard Meier, Fire Expert, the NFPA, the National Safety Council and others to help you celebrate safely.
Fireworks Safety Tips For Adults:
Keep your distance! Set off fireworks only in an open area, well away from people buildings and trees. Always shoot fireworks up and away. Never shoot fireworks at another person or at objects. Never shoot fireworks from a metal or glass container.
Go for the Dunk! Have a working garden hose and bucket of water handy. Dispose of used fire works by soaking overnight in a bucket of water.
Never pick-up or re-ignite a firework that doesn’t light. Leave them sit for 20 minutes, then soak in a bucket of water. Discard.
Don’t! DIY. Never attempt to modify fireworks or make your own. One at a time. Light only 1 firework at a time. Read and follow all label directions and warnings.
Protect yourself. Always wear safety glasses when igniting fireworks.
Never place any part of your body directly over a fireworks device. Never carry fireworks in your pocket.
Right Minded. Do not use fireworks if you have been drinking (or using drugs).
Keeping Kids Safe
Just Say No! Fireworks are not child’s play. Keep kids away. According to the CPSC, Fireworks cause more injuries than hatchets & axes (you’d never hand your 7-year-old an ax and tell them to go play.)
Always have an adult present. Never give fireworks or sparklers to young children. Sparklers can reach 2000°F (1093°C)! That’s hot enough to melt metal!
Keeping your pets safe.
Leave Fido at home. Loud booms are stressful for 4-legged family members.
Give them Space. Never shoot fireworks of any kind (consumer fireworks, sparklers, fountains, etc.) near pets. Pets need ID in case they run off.
At home, put your pet in a safe, interior room to avoid exposure to loud sounds.
